Papillomas: causes, danger and methods of treatment

examination of papilloma on the body

Papilloma is formed by the growth of the upper layer of the skin - the epidermis. It looks like an outgrowth of skin ranging in size from 1 to 5-7 millimeters, less often up to 2 centimeters. The shape varies from a dotted or slightly hanging outgrowth of the skin to a pea.

The color of papilloma is often light beige, in skin tone. But both white and dark brown papillomas are known. Papillomas are localized on the skin of the face, neck, abdomen and back, in the armpits, on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, larynx, trachea.

The growth of papillomas in a limited area of the skin is called papillomatosis, it looks like white plaques in the form of cauliflower, it is located mainly on the oral mucosa in the elderly.

Why papillomas appear

The human papillomavirus, or HPV for short, is responsible for the appearance of papillomas. Different strains of the virus are known - oncogenic and non-oncogenic. Oncogenic strains are also called strains of low or high carcinogenic risk. When infected with an oncogenic strain of the virus, the risk of papilloma degeneration into a malignant neoplasm, tumor increases.

Infection with the human papillomavirus occurs through household or sexual contact with carriers of the virus. Not all contacts get sick. After sexual contact, the probability of infection is about 70% percent, with household contact - less.

For women, infection with a HPV strain of high oncogenic risk is dangerous for the development of cervical cancer. If this strain of the virus is detected, it is recommended to visit the gynecologist regularly for follow-up examinations. If there is no infection, you can get vaccinated against cervical cancer. The vaccine is administered to girls from 9 years old and adult women three times.

Papillomas grow intensively with a decrease in immunity - after prolonged illness, against the background of constant overwork and lack of sleep, while taking drugs that reduce defenses. A change in the hormonal background during pregnancy and a natural decrease in immunity in a pregnant woman often leads to an increased growth of papillomas during this period.

Papillomas are characterized by a slow growth rate, however, during pregnancy, they not only rapidly increase in size, but new elements also appear.

What is the danger of papillomas?

  • Papillomas cause psychological discomfort, this is a cosmetic defect that changes the appearance for the worse.
  • A papilloma that has long existed on the body can degenerate into a malignant tumor if HPV belongs to an oncogenic strain.
  • The appearance of papillomas in places of friction of clothing leads to their anguish and bleeding or inflammation of the surrounding tissues.
  • The growth of papillomas in the larynx is manifested by hoarseness of voice, difficulty in breathing.

How to cure papilloma

It is impossible to cure papilloma with medicines. If an outgrowth has formed, it must be removed. At the same time, we must not forget that the weakening of immunity or the continuation of life in the rhythm of "wear and tear" can provoke the re-growth of papillomas. Therefore, after the removal of papillomas, you should pay more attention to your health - avoid hypothermia and infection with viral infections, eat well, rest, get enough sleep.

Papillomas, which are often injured by clothing, bleed or become inflamed, must be removed!

The appearance of papilloma or its increased growth is a signal of the need to consult a doctor for advice and a decision on the method of treatment.

Removal of papillomas on the skin is performed by surgeons in a surgical hospital using the following methods:

  • apparatus Surgitron (radio knife, radio wave removal),
  • scalpel,
  • laser.

If the patient's skin is not a papilloma, but a nevus, it is removed by an oncologist.

Papillomas on the female genital organs are called warts, they are removed by gynecologists.
